Smories

There can’t be enough places online for kids to show their talent, and this site does it in such a simple, effective way i just had to share it. Every month there are 50 new stories added, read by kids. The idea behind the site is that kids love hearing other kids reading stories, and makes them active in wanting to join up and do it themselves. You can even add your own stories that will be read by kids 8-11 years old.

Renaud Hallée – Sonar

Video by Renaud Hallée
Shapes and sounds, connected by the timeline. Amazing how it works, the visuals in synch with the music, you watch it and feel like you know what’s coming next, that you’ve seen it before. In the same way as The Designers Republic did for Warp shapes give the sounds a personality, and vice versa. When I listen to music without lyrics i can’t help but see shapes and images (when i’m not distracted that is). The sounds can bring up memories, or dreams but most of the time they’re abstract. In a way a dance move is also an abstract way to visualize the sounds you’re hearing, synching with the beats, anticipating the climax, feeling the music building up and joining in. This is the visual way of doing such a thing, but it works for me.

The xx – Islands

Music by The xx
Video by Saam Farahmand
This video reminds me of Daft Punk – Around the world directed by Michel Gondry. In a similar way it uses the repetition of the song to tell the story. I can imagine the director of this video scribbling on a piece of paper where each transition in the song should start and where the subtle changes in the dance moves slowly build up to the climax. The subtleness is what hits me right from the start, and it seems to fit the song really well. Love at the start and hurt at the end, and you can’t quite see when it went wrong. Sounds close to the truth to me.
